What do I need to play and where do I get it? Ringette is an ice sport and requires skates, helmets and other protective equipment.  We usually call this "gear".  Ringette gear is very similar to hockey gear.  The essential differences between hockey gear and ringette gear are the stick and the cage (the front part of the helmet).  You cannot wear a hockey cage instead of a ringette cage and you cannot use a cut off hockey stick in place of a ringette stick. Another difference is the pelvic protection and leg covering.  In ringette, players typically wear a "girdle" that includes hip, thigh, tailbone and genital protection. Ringette players typically cover their girdle and shinguards with full length ringette pants.   Girdles and ringette pants CAN be substituted with hockey pants, hockey socks and genital protection (a “jock” or a “jill”). Hockey gear is generally easier to find (both new and used) and less expensive.   The photos below show Ringette gear and hockey gear and the usual order that everything gets put on! Things to keep in mind: Your base layer should be comfortable and not bulky. Pajama pants work well for younger players.  Dressing rooms are shared spaces.  Please arrive wearing your base layer and don't remove your base layer in shared spaces. If using hockey pants and socks, remember something needs to hold the socks up.  The shorts shown below are not just any sport short, they have a velcro tab for attaching socks

Sizing Your Stick

While wearing skates, the stick should come just under the armpit (anything higher is actually a rule violation).   Most new players will need to cut a new stick to size (good reason to look for a used one!).   When cutting the stick to size, be careful to cut the correct end as the tip on some sticks are painted over. If you cut the wrong side, the stick will be unusable and you will need to purchase another stick.

Ringette Cage

It's very important to note that a ringette cage is different from a hockey cage!  A ringette cage has smaller holes since a ringette stick doesn't have a blade like a hockey stick.  Here is a video on how to install a cage.
